Small amounts of magnet material in very specialised shapes are often needed for research and development purposes. However, finding vendors willing to deliver such material for reasonable prices and within acceptable delivery times is virtually impossible. Unfortunately, buying off-the shelf magnet blocks and machining them into the required dimensions is also not an option in the already magnetised state due to mechanical challenges and problems with magnetised dust. Therefore, we want to set up a facility that would enable us to magnetise sintered permanent magnet material after machining it to the desired dimensions. This will allow for much easier and cheaper access to magnets in specialised shapes and magnetisation grades. Such customized magnets are required by both applicants, the DESY Undulator Group and the Laboratory for Electrical Mobilty (LEM) at HAW,  for faster prototyping and testing. The planned facility will also allow the Undulator Group to further their research into demagnetizing processes and will help the Laboratory for Electric Mobility to foster new collaborations with other research teams that use their prototypes of new electrical drives in applied engineering projects.

Some of the key components for the planned magnetisation setup are already available at DESY, but some subcomponents, e.g. for precise positioning of the magnet material, need to be developed further. A variety of magnetic measurement equipment to assess the quality of the prepared magnet material is available at the DESY Undulator lab.
